European Common Framework

Portuguese in the European Common Framework

The Institute's teaching method follows the standards and principles of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Created by the Council of Europe, the CEFR is the result of more than twenty years of foreign language teaching projects and research. The framework describes the knowledge and abilities that language students have to develop to be efficient speakers within the cultural context in which the language is spoken. Through its path, the student will gain the desired linguistic competences he or she seeks in a gradual and constant manner.

Main Benefits
  • Fulfilling learners' needs → The CEFR was designed so that the students' communication needs are addressed in each learning stage; helping teachers and institutions to maintain their focus on fullfilling the students' goals.
  • Identity and Culture → The framework takes into consideration that a language can not be dissociated from the cultural context in which it is spoken. The framework invites the students to understand and respect the similarities and differences of his own culture and the culture he or she is being immersed on.
  • Quality Guidelines → The framework provides a common base to standardize foreign language teaching, fostering transparency and enhancing the quality of foreign language courses, programs and qualifications.
  • Self evaluation parameters → The introduction of objective proficiency goals and criteria helps students better understand his or hers own level of knowledge of the language.

Check below the communication objectives for learning stage within the CEFR.

  1. A1 Beginner
  2. A2 Elementary
  3. B1 Intermediate
  4. B2 Upper Intermediate
  5. C1 Advanced
  6. C2 Proficiency
