The World Economic Forum recently published the article "These 5 languages Will Help You Stand Out The Most" on their websit; the article listed the foreign languages that could help you stand out professionally. One can not deny that the WEF, an organization that gathers the most renowned political and business leaders of the world, might not be wrong when they indicate that, beyond English, the most important languages in the world of business are Mandarin, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese.
The ability to communicate in Portuguese sets apart students and professionals that work in or with Latin America, and the WEF lists great reasons to learn Portuguese:
1 - There are more than 200 millions Portuguese speakers
Today there are more than 200 million Portuguese speakers around the world. Projections estimate that this number can reach 335 million by the year 2050.
2 - Crossing borderlines
The Portuguese language is spoken in 11 countries and regions. To learn Portuguese is to dive into the rich cultures of the old Portuguese colonies in South America, Africa and Asia. Speaking Portuguese as a foreign is to fully experience the music, literature, and daily activities of these very diverse countries.
3 - Brazil, the business opportunity hub in Latin America
The largest economy in South America, with approximately 50% of both its area and population, Brazil houses an important portfolio of industries in agribusiness, mining and oil and gas. The country also serves as the regional headquarters of many multinationals operating in the region. Therefore, professionals who speak the language can add more value to their organizations. To have Portuguese on one's resumé can be an strategic step for executives working in Latin America.
4 - Portuguese might not be a hard language to grasp
If your mother tongue is a romance language (or if you had some exposure to one), learning Portuguese will be relatively easier. The same can be said if you speak other European languages.
If you are looking forward learning Portuguese as a foreign language, the Instituto de Língua e Cultura Brasileira ILC Brasil offers the best learning experience in their classes in Rio de Janeiro and online.
